Psalm 62:5-8 (NIV)
5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
7 My salvation and my honor depend on God[a];
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
8 Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.
How have you been sleeping lately?
This is an area of my life I definitely need to work on. Despite my attempts to follow the best tips from sleep experts, the moment my head hits the pillow, my thoughts light up with all the day’s events, tomorrow’s to-do list, and that nagging dilemma I need to figure out.
Can you relate?
I can blame my sleep struggles on any number of things, but deep down I know the root is my struggle with self-reliance. When I don’t trust God with my problems, I take on burdens I’m not meant to carry. I lie awake planning and problem-solving instead of enjoying the rest and peace He offers me.
Can I trust God?
Trusting someone is often based on two things: their heart (Do they love me?) and their authority (Do they have the knowledge and power to follow through on their promise?).
I can’t think of anyone more qualified in those two categories than God. I don't even pass my own trust test 100% of the time. I’ve faced situations where I was guided by wrong motives or had no control over the outcome.
But even in my moments of failure or inability, God is enough. I can trust Him always, in all circumstances.
What a relief! I don’t need to have it all figured out. I can close my eyes and rest in the knowledge that the Almighty God of the Universe loves me and is faithful to His promises. I can sleep peacefully in my deep trust in Him.
Reflection: What does it look like to trust Jesus? How would my life be different if I trusted Him more?
LYRICS
'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus
Lyrics by Louisa M. R. Stead
Music by William James Kirkpatrick
Verse 1:
'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus Just to take Him at His Word Just to rest upon His promise Just to know, "Thus saith the Lord"
Chorus: Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him How I've proved Him o'er and o'er Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus Oh, for grace to trust Him more
Verse 2: O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust His cleansing blood;
Just in simple faith to plunge me,
’Neath the healing, cleansing flood.
Verse 3:
Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life, and rest, and joy, and peace.
Verse 4:
I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.
