Hebrews 13:5-8 (NIV)
5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”
6 So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?"
7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
When I was in junior high, the song “Hungry” by Kathryn Scott was released. I was hooked at the first drum beats. This was a time in my life when many changes were happening around me. I remember putting on this album and feeling the presence of God in the midst of it all. It's one of the songs I sang most often when I first started to lead worship at my church.
Something about change makes us hungry for stability. Change can be difficult, even scary.
I think of the changes the twelve disciples underwent to follow Jesus. From tax collectors, fishermen, and zealots, to dedicated followers, constantly traveling from town to town and witnessing miracles that changed them from the inside out.
Yet one thing remained the same: they had Jesus. As Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever.” We can face big life transitions with confidence, for our consistent God says,
“Never will I leave you;
never will I forsake you.”
So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5b-6)
Let’s allow our hunger for stability in a changing world to be satisfied in God’s presence.
Reflection: What changes am I experiencing in my life? Spend time in prayer reflecting on those changes with Jesus.
